Hello all, Here I am, after a long and exhausting wrestling match with the Airlive WMU-6500FS, and the Airlive "tech support" team. As you can notice, I am using scare quotes, as my cat is certainly more competent in handling networking and hardware issues than the Airlive "team." Especially that Xxxx Xxx dude ( xxxxxxxxxxxx@airlive.com), the Airlive "star expert," is abysmally incompetent and supremely useless (believe it or not, he has no idea what UPnP is ). So I'll spare you the gory details. The short story is that I had the unfortunate impulse, after reading some ill-fated review, to purchase this wreck of a NAS. And I've been waiting for a proper firmware for about a year now--though I've pretty much lost hope, knowing who's in charge . The firmware I have installed at this point in time, is the R4.00b2. And this one's bad ..., as bad as they get. Even the Airlive team, the paradigm of ineptitude, deemed it bad, as they withdrew it from their website. So bad, that I almost feel like going back to the previous release, which was also very bad. In short, I am on the lookout for alternatives (or, at least, updates). I see JoKeR has some stuff on his website, though I don't read Polish, and I am bit wary of installing something I don't know what it is. I am, frankly, ready to ditch any firmware of AirLive inspiration: I don't really want to have anything to do with those bastards. Anyone tried any of these embedded Linux distros? Any luck? Dear Joker, would you care to give a short English presentation of your firmware versions? How about the C006 and the C006-M2? What improvements do they bring? Here's, finally, the most annoying issue about the WMU-6500FS: the USB transfer is only one-way: from the USB drive to the HDD. Is there any hope to fix that so one can also transfer files the other way round, meaning from the HDD to the USB dongle, without, of course, routing via the network? Or is that something that's hard wired in the WMU-6500FS? Will any firmware hack help? Cheers, and thanks for any replies.

Hmm, C006 (without M) is a simple version of my firmware (no changes in kernel), incuded: telnet (always on) add-on local rc script on disk (/mnt/C/sys/etc/rc-local) more commands in busybox changed identity (user-agent,peerid) in transmission client, to azureus. changed default identity (user-agent) in wget, to firefox added PATH variables in shell, to disk: /mnt/C/sys/bin added link /usr/sbin to /mnt/C/sys/sbin link /etc/mini-lpd/ to /mnt/C/sys/etc/mini-lpd/, for(?) printserv added /var/config/vsftpd.user_list and link in /etc I do not remember what yet. C006-M (currently M3) is a "advanced" version. changes are described in the readme.txt added to the archive, he contains changes in kernel. added support for NFS, USBtoUSB link, USB CDROM, etc... some for the test, does not have the possibility to test all alone. PS: you will find more information here LINK

changes are described in the readme.txt added to the archive Thank you JKR, but I'm afraid your Linux lingo is Chinese to me. Well, ... almost. Lemme tell you what I understand: I unzip your firmware and flash my unit as usual, via the web interface. After flashing, the WMU-6500FS boots up as usual, and I get pretty much the same interface I am used to (and loathe), plus some extra options? Is that so? What I would be very interested to see is (1) a different, and more evolved, BT client. My topmost wish, however, is to be able to (2) transfer data directly from the HDD to the attached USB stick without routing everything via the network. Is that what you mean by USBtoUSB link? I think I know what you mean by USB CDROM, alright. Not sure about NFS ... I take it your firmware will give me the extra option to format the HDD as NFS as opposed to the default ext2? I think I also know what you mean by "telnet (always on)," but that's just about it. Now, of course, I could ask you to explain every line in the Readme.txt file, though I suppose you have more important things to do. Could I, at least, ask you to answer (1) and (2) above? Many thanks, and please go easy on a Linux ignoramus like me...

Yes, no changes made in webinterface, no differences in the basic use. I have the only moment now, so: 1) alternative bt client is available on telnet connection. 2) transfer hdd->usb is also accessible via telnet/ssh console. usb2usb is a link PC<->BOX via special usb-bridge cable. nfs - wikipedia LINKconsole - wikipedia LINK

By the way, what's with the software at http://mgb111.pradnik.net/dodatki/? Is that for the WMU-6500FS? And if yes, how do I use it?

I was going over R3210's datasheet ( http://www.rdc.com.tw/Uploads/datasheet/R3210_Mbrief_20061121.pdf), and noticed it supports Windows. Here's a wild thought: why not install Windows Embedded CE? (Or is that a stupid question? ) MS's got a 180 days free trial for download ... This, again, for Linux noobies like me, who don't feel like, or don't have time to invest in learning Linux from scratch...

for you is official software (-: Well, yeah . Anyway, I'm just looking for something hassle-free, no time to mess with command-line stuff. At any rate, I will give your latest firmware mod a try, and report back. Thanks for sharing it.

Hey JKR, here's what happened recently in my WMU-6500FS saga: I flashed the box with the official Airlive 4.00a9 firmware, and then flashed it with your latest M5. Things went fine, and I was able to telnet myself onto the unit. The WebUI, however, had only a9 options, and I was missing some of the b2 options, hence I decided to flash the box with the official Airlive 4.00b2 firmware, and then flash with your M5 hoping that this way I could capture the best of both worlds--meaning b2 options in the UI, plus your enhancements. Now I cannot telnet onto the unit. I am using the standard telnet client that comes w/Vista. What am I doing wrong please?

Alright, I got it: it was only the firewall. It's all good now. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Now I'm trying to navigate through the folders etc., but I keep getting "Permission denied." ls doesn't return anything. What up with that? [Sorry to bother you with all this noobie stuff, I'm sure you have better things to do that educate some poor sod. I'm just trying to install some file manager like vifm, and I could use some help...]
See also attached screen shot.

Cool! Now what you have to do is to teach me how to execute mc-4.6.1 I tried ./mc-4.6.1 and sh mc-4.6.1 and all I got was some gibberish peppered with "not found" and "syntax error" errors. Does it have to be placed somewhere specifically?
