Finally, I was able to get the print server going.
I am using the MGB100_400S03.img suggested by Schufti.
Details:
On the SMCWAPS-G
The mini-lpd that gets launched when I plugged my Canon printer did not do anything.
I pocked arroung and found the "lpd" deamon in the bin directory of the Usbfs file system.
I ftp'ed the file in and with telnet I executed "./lpd"

On the Client side (windows)
I followed the instruction in the manual ftp://manualftp:7d5PTc7r@airliveftp.dyndns.org/Multimedia/WMU-6000FS
to set up the printer.

The printer worked as advertised.

I hope this helps someone.

1) I, however, need help with making a firmware build that includes lpd (maybe substitute mini-lpd) and calls it at init. It would be nice to get this based on the MGB100_400S03.img image. Schufti?

2) I would not need #1 if I can get the usbfs working (i.e booting fron the HD or the USB stick). I untarred in the root directory and restarted. The unit does not repond to anything. I tried USB as well as internal HD with no luck. any ideas?

Thanks,
Gus

Hi gus,

1) funny it doesn't work with original lpd. would be interesting to know the difference. Is the printer detected if you look at the usb devices? what does dmesg say?

2) never tried the usbfs myself; allway trusted it was compatible with the Kamikaze autobootfs method. Did you try that, too? If it's on (V)FAT the filenames need to be max 8 char! So even with the KK autobootfs you have to rename to autoboot (maybe that will change in next release)

im a noob when it comes to this.. is it possible that you could give a step by step?

try not to leave any little detail out. i still have a stock, out of the box SMCWAPS-G.
my main goals are 1)to get a print server set up. 2) be able to access the FTP from the internet. (and maybe the printer from the net?) to help complete the 2nd goal is there a way to change the port the ftp server uses?

again, sry bout being the noob. but im sure im not the only one. this thing is going for about $30 from buy.com right now, and there have been links to here for firmware modding, so im sure there will be a flood of ppl.

Thanks

1)  The printer was always detected. dmesg showed
hub.c: new USB device 00:0a.0-1, assigned address 3
       printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04A9 pid 0x1094
and /var/log/messages showed
       syslog: Starting mini-lpd-0.4

the printer is there but mini-lpd does not do anything. It has to be replaced with lpd. Would you be willing to make us an image with that?

2) I tried autoboot on a Fat usb stick. I was able to see the KK file system, however, I could not do much with it. It needed significant configuration changes. The USBfs is a better solution for me if I can get it to work.

I hope somebody can help us with image. By the way do you have the source code for the MGB100_400S03.img image.

Thanks,
Gus

Mike,
It is not hard nor complicated.

1)In the wiki there is a section on how to flash the firmware. I suggest that you follow it.
2) Once you do step 1 , I recommend reflashing with  MGB100_400S03.img (nfs, telnet and ftp, are in )
http://rapidshare.com/files/57042078/MGB100_400S03.img.html

3) now you should be able to telnet into the box user:root password: same as your GUI

4) get the attached lpd file into your gadget either via ftp or via a usb stick.

5) type "./lpd" in the directory where you put it.

6) set up your client per the PDF file mentioned above.

If you have any problems paste your dmesg and /var/log/messages output here.

Good luck.

First time using Telnet today Wink (what kinda former Geek Squad person am i! lol) but i do remember a lil Linux. i was freaking out cause i just couldnt acces the "C" folder.. then realized it was capitalized. DUH!

I FTP'ed the file.. and it wouldnt work... err... omg.. as i was typing this i remembered that i had to extract the file.. arg.. well i did that over telnet and ran it. it looked like it did something.
is it possible to use the printer if i am away from home? cause right now im at school. cause that would be sweet!

also, i dont have a printer hooked up to it yet.. (forgot to attach one before i left for school)

also, is it possible to change the ports that are used for FTP? cause i think my ISP blocks the lower ports.

but i will report back when i get home and get a printer attached.

OMG THANKS SO MUCH!

Hi gus,

sorry, it looks like the latest auto* features I took over from paganov4.bin to be compatible with existing KK-solution are not compatible with paganov3 and the USBfs (see coments to files in download section).

You could try to rename autoexec to autoinit, but I think then at least the first two lines should be skipped. Maybe pagano can help making a V4 compatible autoinit for the USBfs.

OTOH, since using USBfs leaves the kernel being the only part used from the flash-fw, you might also use paganov3 as base for USBfs.

Hi schufti,
is there a chance I could get the build environment for MGB100_400S03.img zipped and posted. I am trying to make a build with lpd instead of mini-lpd. I started from the available source code packs, I believe I am missing few configuration files.

Thanks,
Gus
