Hi to all,

In case we can put a new kernel on the MFB100, which version you prefer?

* Original with minimal mods
* OpenWRT x86
* OpenSLUG for x86
* Clean Debian
* Some other from... (insert here your surggestion)

Please, we need to found the best/easy distro to integrate (I prefer to target the NAS capabilities of the device!)

I would prefer either OpenWrt or full Debian I think. Full Debian would be very nice, but I fear that as it is not optimized for this low powered CPU with small amounts of RAM it will be slow. In that case OpenWrt would be my preferred distro :-)

Being able to load any kernel from disk would be better than replacing the kernel in the flash, but updating it to the newest kernel that will work with the hardware and OpenWRT would still be useful. Presumably the closed-source wireless module won't work in 2.6.x, so it would probably have to be 2.4.34. Just make sure it's optimised for 486, all the crucial stuff is compiled in, and everything else can be done with modules.

Debian doesn't appear to be terribly fussy about the kernel anyway, at least I havent't had problems with Etch on the 2.4.28 firmware kernel.

Hi,

From my point of view the wireless module of the device isn't relevant, but good NAS tools have high priority. In this scenario the OpenWRT distro is not good, plain Debian is crapy, and others like OpenSLUG are better!

I'm desesperate searching for a OpenSource project related to a full NAS based on embedded linux.

Modding projectes (like Unslung and similar) reuse the initial web user interface from the manufacturer. In the area of (wifi)Routers some interfaces exists (DD-Wrt, X-Wrt, Tomato), but not for a NAS solution.

Anyone is interested in open a new project for this?
I feel that people involved in OpenSLUG can join the X-Wrt project if we can split the system in: core-router-NAS-others

EDITED: Anyone knows about this?

EDITED: Perhaps we need to do these milestones:

1. Full install of OpenWRT x86 in HD/USB and link ALL the tools from original firmware. With this first approach we don't remove any initial functionality.

2. Create a new Webif^2 version for our system. Perhaps in collaboration with the zaphot (OpenNas) comunity. Good inspiration for features/interface are Synology's products.
